1. IBI & ABA

Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA):
  • ABA uses the science of behaviour to change behaviour. More specifically, to increase or decrease behaviour, to improve the quality of behaviour, or to teach new behaviours.
  • ABA can be the basis of addressing a broad spectrum of human behaviour, with a focus on socially significant behaviour.
Definition of IBI:
  • IBI is the application of ABA principles to teach individuals.
  • Funded IBI typically involves 20 or more hours per week; however privately funded services can be arranged at fewer hours subject to clinical approval.
  • IBI ideally begins early (before 4 years) however we service children of a variety of ages.
  • Ingredients of a successful IBI Program:
    • Uses systematic behavioural teaching methods to build and generalize skills.
    • Makes program changes based on direct measures of learning.
    • Takes a functional approach to problem behaviours.
    • Curriculum is comprehensive in scope and developmental in sequence.
    • Programming is individualized, takes place in variety of settings, with well trained staff.
    • Involves parental input and transition to the classroom environment.
Our Teaching Approach
  • Verbal Behaviour (VB) Model–Verbal Behaviour programs are based on Skinner’s analysis of Verbal Behaviour (1957) and focus on teaching across verbal domains (e.g. expressive, receptive, requesting, etc.) VB incorporates DTT, NET and errorless teaching methods.
  • Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT)- DTT is a specialized method of instruction which breaks down skills into component parts. As a child masters simple components, more complex skills are taught. Skills are taught by delivering a cue or instruction, prompting the child to respond correctly, and reinforcing the child for making a correct response. DTT usually involves collecting data on the child’s responses to specific program targets.
  • Natural Environment Teaching (NET)– NET is unstructured and uses a learner’s motivation and activities (as opposed to teacher selected set of materials) as the basis for the lesson. Reinforcement is direct and specific to the activity. The loose structure and many examples of concepts support generalization of language across all environments at any time.
  • Errorless Approach –In an errorless approach, prompts are given immediately and abundantly when teaching new skills to assist the child in making correct responses. By doing this, the child makes few, if any, errors, and receives a great deal of reinforcement. The amount of assistance (prompting) is gradually reduced over succeeding trials so that the child can perform the skill independently.
